Improvements have been made to the Leader Board

It is now possible to reorder the columns by clicking on the headers to sort in ascending or descending order (by clicking consecutively) for:

  • Callsign,
  • DXCC Worked
  • DXCC Confirmed
  • DXCC Credited
  • QSO

For example, clicking on the DXCC Credit column, the data will be reordered by Credits, showing first those with more credits and gradually those with fewer credits. The ranking changes accordingly. For example, a station could be #1 for countries worked and #9 for credits.

If sorted by the QSO column, those with more QSOs in the Log will be listed first.

Visit the dashboard and upload yours today. Here is one of the most beautiful dashboards at the moment:

6SO: Pioneer of American Radio Enthusiasm

In recent days I have delved into the history of a little-known but fundamental figure in the origins of radio enthusiasm: Gladys Kathleen Parkin, one of the first documented YL (young lady) technicians in the United States. I have gathered this information to share with you because it represents a concrete example of how, as early as the early 1900s, radio was a field of experimentation open to anyone with expertise, curiosity, and determination.

Gladys Kathleen Parkin was born in 1900 in Bolinas, California, and grew up at a time when radio was still an experimental technology made of sparks, coils, and handmade components. She was introduced to wireless at the age of five, observing the devices installed in hotels run by her family, and by 1909, along with her brother John, she began operating one of the first home stations in Northern California, using spark transmitters of a few dozen watts and coherer or galena receivers, later replaced by a single-valve regenerative. Their antennas were wires stretched between two supports, with dedicated earth, and they worked primarily between 200 and 600 meters, the bands available to amateurs after the Radio Act of 1912.

Kathleen's early connections were typical of the time: regular reception of coastal stations like KPH Bolinas, KFS San Francisco, and KET Mare Island, tuning tests with merchant ships and fishing vessels equipped with Marconi apparatus, and signal exchanges with other amateur radio operators on the West Coast, often within a range of 20–150 km, with occasional greater distances when conditions permitted. Telegraphy was the only possible language, and spark modulation produced wide and unstable signals, but sufficient to establish service contacts, range tests, and local communications.

In 1916, at fifteen, Kathleen took the federal exam for the First-Class Commercial Radio Operator License, which required advanced knowledge of electromagnetic theory, wavelength calculation, operation of spark and valve transmitters, international regulations, and high-speed telegraphy. She passed all tests and obtained the call sign 6SO, becoming the youngest woman in the United States to achieve a first-class license and the first in California. The apparatus she used at that time, also shown in the famous photograph published in Electrical Experimenter, was a quarter-kilowatt spark transmitter with a variable LC circuit, hand-wound coils, and adjustable capacitor, paired with a regenerative receiver with reaction control. All components were mounted on wooden or bakelite panels, with visible wiring and powered by batteries and primitive rectifiers.

With the 6SO license, Kathleen could operate coastal stations and onboard apparatus, and collaborated with the physics laboratory of Dominican College, overseeing the installation and maintenance of wireless systems used for teaching. In subsequent years, she worked with her siblings in the Parkin Manufacturing Company, which produced components and small radio devices. She remained active in the field until maturity, maintaining a more technical than public profile.

Kathleen Parkin passed away on August 3, 1990, in Marin County, California, from age-related natural causes. She did not leave patents or formal technical publications, but her legacy in the amateur radio world is clear and documented: she showed that a young operator, in an era dominated by male technicians and complex apparatus, could build, tune, and maintain complete radio systems with professional competence; she was one of the first U.S. YL to obtain a first-class commercial license, paving the way for the female presence in coastal and maritime radio services; and represented a concrete model of a self-builder, capable of designing and creating functional apparatus in a period when nothing was standardized.

For this reason, I wanted to share her story: 6SO is not just a call sign from the past, but an example of competence, technical autonomy, and pioneering spirit that belongs to the very roots of radio enthusiasm.
