Ten-Tec: living history in the hands of hams

Ten-Tec was founded in 1968 in Tennessee by two real amateur radio operators, two hams who lived radio before they even designed it: Al Kahn W8AKE and Jack Burchfield K4JU. They were convinced that America could still build simple, solid, and fully domestic equipment without relying on anyone. This idea also inspired the name: TEN as Tennessee, their land, and TEC as technology. In essence: technology of Tennessee, made by radio amateurs for radio amateurs.

In 1969, the small Power Mite arrived, the first solid-state QRP that immediately showcased their philosophy: lightweight, essential equipment with no frills. Then in the 1970s, the Argonaut 505 and 509 exploded, radios loved by those who took their radios everywhere, and the Triton introduced 100-watt solid-state to a changing market. In the 1980s and 1990s, Ten-Tec experienced its best period: Omni, Corsair, Paragon, radios that are still turned on today as if time hasn't passed, with soft audio and reception that seems to breathe.

With the new millennium came digital models: Pegasus, Orion, Orion II, modern devices that even ended up at the Smithsonian as examples of well-made American technology. But then the world changed, costs rose, and internal production became too burdensome. In 2014, the historic Sevierville factory closed, and production stopped. RKR first, and then Dishtronix, saved the brand, maintaining service, spare parts, and repairs. Since then, Ten-Tec hasn't produced new radios, except for small updates like the Omni VII+, and the line remains dormant.

Yet Ten-Tec equipment continues to breathe in the stations of many amateur radio operators. Every time a Corsair, an Omni, or an Argonaut is turned on, it's as if that little Tennessee factory is still there. It's a pity that these jewels are no longer built, but those who own them know they have a piece of history, a fragment of a way of doing radio that won't return. Ten-Tec still lives in the hands of hams, in the dials that turn, in the signals that come to life, in the receivers that seem to listen with you. And as long as these radios continue to sound, Ten-Tec will never truly disappear.
